Your Emotions Are Your Emotional Guidance System (EGS)

Your emotions are your emotional guidance system!

Have you ever had an emotion immediately rise out of you that made you feel angry, hurt, sad, anxious, etc.,? And then all of a sudden, you begin to FREAK OUT?

Well, you may be freaking out for a couple of different reasons:

1) You may feel unsafe in feeling this emotion and might automatically resort to working against it rather than with it. You can do this by making it go away as fast as possible through a distraction or by putting a sticker on top of it and saying it’s fine and moving on.

Or, 2) you feel unprepared in how to deal with the specific emotion by not having the resources and tools to help yourself through this.

However, here’s the thing: these problematic emotions are coming up for a reason — they need to be dealt with; they need to be worked through and addressed so you can heal from them and properly move on.

A helpful way to deal with these situations is to allow that emotion inside, to feel it, and to pinpoint where the unease is stemming from.

I know that can sound scary – but bare with me:

When you know the origin of it, you can then figure out the story you’re giving it and ask if that aligns with your soul (a positive story) or your ego (a fear-based/negative story.)

Ultimately, you want to tell yourself a story that will make you feel better — and that’s also TRUE. You need to bridge that negativity with positivity. For example, you can reshape the meaning of the story to, “This is happening for me, through this experience I can learn to ___ (grow, gain resilience, love myself, etc.,) and it’ll put me on the right path where everything will align no matter what.”

Every experience is here to teach us something, and our emotions serve as a GPS for us.

When we redirect our stories and the meaning that we give these stories, we begin to not only feel better, but we also heal and grow from the experiences as opposed to being dragged by them and staying attached even if we do ‘move on from them’.

It matters how you show up for yourself and your emotions. Avoidance and negative storytelling that’s based on fears are just illusions. Not only that, but it also means we are afraid to face ourselves and instead succumb to life happening TO us instead of FOR us.

We become the victims of our own worlds instead of learning how to navigate our way through the way we are meant to.

We need to let our pain/negative emotions inside if we want to warm them up and heal them. We have to work with them instead of against them (avoidance).

But you can’t be afraid. You must keep in mind these are emotions are here to serve you. So when they arise, you can rise above them in a way that will benefit you.

Ask yourself: what emotions are currently hurting me? What is triggering me and how do I want to feel about those things instead that will enable me to rise above myself instead of depleting me and/or taking something away from me?

Don’t get me wrong; you’re allowed to feel negative emotions and such — in fact, you’re encouraged to sit and feel them out. After all, that is the only way through to the other side. But also know that you can work with them by taking care of yourself and being able to rise above them as lessons that will propel you forward.
