Questions people ask
Why can't I put my phone down?
Because there is usually a specific thing you are reaching for — to be witnessed, to disappear, to measure yourself, or to feel in control of something. The woman checking for likes and the woman scrolling to vanish look identical from the outside and need completely different things.
How long does this quiz take?
Seven questions, about two minutes. Free, no account needed.
What are the four patterns?
The Witness-Seeker, the Escape Artist, the Comparer, and the Controller. They reach for the phone for different reasons — to be seen, to leave, to measure, or to hold onto something predictable — which is why one blocker app helps one of them and not the others.
Is this a screen time test?
No. It never counts your hours or asks you to justify them — plenty of people with modest screen time feel worse than people with a lot. It names the emotional contract between you and the device, which is the part a number cannot show.
Do I have to delete social media?
Nothing here tells you to, and for most of these patterns deleting the app relocates the need rather than meeting it. Knowing what you are actually reaching for tends to change the habit more than a blocker does.
