The Understudy
You keep auditioning against a stage you're not even on.
✦ The mirror
The moment you sit down, she opens a second window. Not consciously, always — sometimes it's just a habit your hand runs before your mind catches up: a scroll through someone else's finished feed, someone else's published book, someone else's reel with the good lighting and the confident caption. And now you're not making something. You're auditioning your rough, unfinished, five-minutes-old attempt against their polished, edited, publicly-selected best.
That's not a fair fight and some part of you knows it — but The Understudy doesn't care about fair. She cares about rank. She needs to know where you stand before you're allowed to move, and the only way she knows how to measure that is against someone else's finished product, held up next to your blank page like they're the same kind of object. They're not. One is a result. One is a start. She measures them as if they were twins.
Underneath the comparing is something almost tender: she's trying to keep you safe from wasting your time on something that "won't measure up." But the measuring never stops, because there is always someone further along, and a woman standing on a blank page will always look small next to someone standing on a finished, published, applauded thing. The comparison was never winnable. It was never supposed to be. It was a distraction from the making.
🌱 Where it formed
Somewhere, worth got attached to rank — being the best in the class, the family, the friend group; being noticed specifically FOR being ahead of someone else. So your system learned to check position before it checks progress. Comparison became the fastest way to answer "am I okay?" — except the answer always requires a scoreboard, and scoreboards require you to keep looking outward instead of down at your own page.
💸 What it costs
Hours spent absorbing other people's finished work instead of making your own rough one. A private, running tally of who's "ahead," which never once made your own page better. And the specific grief of abandoning things that were actually going somewhere, purely because someone else's finished version made yours look small by comparison.
🫀 What your body is doing
A system that learned safety meant knowing your rank will keep scanning for it, compulsively, even when no one asked for a ranking. The scroll isn't idle curiosity — it's a nervous system trying to locate itself on a map, except the map it keeps consulting was never built to hold a blank page and a finished masterpiece on the same scale.
✨ Three truths to keep
- ✦You're not comparing your work to theirs. You're comparing your BEGINNING to their ENDING — two different objects, measured as if they were the same. That comparison was rigged before it started.
- ✦The scroll isn't research. It's a nervous system trying to answer "am I okay?" the only way it knows how — externally, by rank — instead of the only way that actually works, which is by looking at your own page.
- ✦Nobody's finished work shows you their blank page, their fortieth deleted draft, their year of mediocre attempts before the good one. You're measuring your whole process against their single best output. That's not a fair sample size.
🔁 The patterns you might recognize
- ·Opening someone else's finished work the moment your own page goes blank, as if research, though it never once helps you write
- ·Feeling a project go from exciting to embarrassing in the exact minute you see someone else's polished version of something similar
- ·Ranking yourself against people whose entire process you've never actually seen — only their highlight reel
- ·Abandoning something that was genuinely progressing, purely because it no longer looked impressive next to someone else's finished thing
This is a description. Yours would be a location.
Reading a pattern is not the same as being told it is yours. The Portal asks you twelve questions and answers with one place on the map — which of these you are actually standing in, saved so you can come back to it, with the first step written for where you are rather than for everyone.
Walk the Portal — free →No account needed. Your Coordinates arrive by email, and you can leave any time.
👣 The first step
Today, before you sit down to make anything, close every other tab, app, and feed first — not as punishment, as an experiment. Make something for fifteen minutes with absolutely no outside reference point available. Notice how strange it feels to have nowhere to check your rank. That discomfort is the muscle you're about to start building: making something because it's yours, not because you've confirmed where it lands.
The others behind this door
Most people recognise themselves in more than one. The Portal tells you which is loudest right now.
Or do something small instead
Reading about a pattern can be a lot. The playroom is the same work with your hands instead of your head — nothing to answer, nothing saved.
There is a deeper reading behind every door
Adventurers get the full pattern story beneath each result — where it runs deeper than the mirror shows, practices matched to how you are wired, and a gentle thread to walk the week. It is the one thing these pages do not carry.
